Our technical team is headed-up by Claudio Gonçalves. Claudio is one of Chile’s great up-and-coming enologists.
With over twenty years of winemaking both abroad (Spain and New Zealand) and Chile, Claudio has amassed a wealth of experience which few local enologists enjoy.
In October 2016 he was voted one of the ‘Top 10 Most Powerful Winemakers in Chile’ by The Drinks Business (published in the United Kingdom).
He graduated in Viticulture & Enology from the Catholic University in Santiago and then went on to complete an MBA at Talca University. Professionally, he previously worked at Viña de Aguirre as an enologist and has recently rejoined us as Head Winemaker.
His style shows a light touch and he is a firm believer that the pure fruit expression should always shine through, letting the grapes and their terroirs speak for themselves.
Bodegas y Viñedos de Aguirre principally has vineyards in five of Chile’s most important wine growing regions:
-Casablanca
-Maule
-Maipo
-Colchagua
-Maule
The viticultural yearly cycle starts in the winter with correct pruning, which leads on into the ripening season with careful canopy management, adequate hydric stress; and finally, gentle harvesting (to mention just a small handful of considerations).
Each region has its own personality and is fantastic for showcasing specific terroirs, though also makes for interesting blended wines drawing characteristics from each region and allowing for complexity as well harmony.
The winery itself today has a total capacity of 14,000,000 litres. This is comprised of:
-Stainless steel Tanks
-Stainless steel tanks with the highest quality French staves
-Premium French and American oak barrels (500).
Three parallel production lines are capable of processing 2,500,000 bottles each month.
Bodegas y Viñedos de Aguirre is proud to be one of only four Chilean wineries to have been awarded both BRC and IFS certificates (both notoriously rigorous). For the second year running, the winery has obtained the best possible qualification in BRC (AA Grade); while, in IFS, the winery was awarded 97.14%. It is important to mention that both certificates cover all processes throughout the yearly cycle (not merely for the production line, as is often the case when companies apply for these certificates).
Furthermore, De Aguirre is always looking for ways to produce wines in ways that are least damaging to the environment. To this effect, of the glass used for the bottles, 90% is recycled.
Whit over 40 years of experience, Sergio Correa transmits the passion he feels for his profession, Winemaker. His career in the wine area has led him to receive:
Chevalier du Tastevine, Bourgogne, Membership of the Brotherhood of Saint-Emilion, the Kinight´s Cross of Merit, awared by the French Gouverment (1997) and the Award of Winemaking Merit as the Best Chilean Winemaker (2002).
